LETTER FROM THE

MINISTER OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Dear Religious Education Parents and Guardians,

As we continue to celebrate this great Easter season and the Resurrection of our Lord, let us move forward in our work to serve His people.

Our 5th Grade students and their families from both St. John’s Religious Education and St. John’s School hosted this year’s Anointing of the Sick Mass. This special mass took place on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at the 1:00pm mass.

Christ gave the Church the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to continue his work among the sick in the world. The Church celebrates this sacrament with members of the Church who are who are experiencing grave or chronic illness such as high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, Parkinson’s, cancer, mental illness or those facing surgery. The Anointing of the Sick may aid in physical recovery, but it also offers peace, strength, and courage to those who are suffering. By the laying on of hands, prayer and anointing with oil, the church witnesses to the sufferer’s participation in the Passion of Jesus and his ultimate victory over sin and death.

Love and Peace,

Cheryl

ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST ALTAR SERVERS

Altar Servers are part of a very ancient tradition in the liturgical life of the church. The server is a member of the assembly who assists the priest and deacon during the Eucharist and other liturgical ceremonies so that the liturgy can be conducted with grace and reverence. Servers are active and full participants in the celebration.

The Altar Servers at St. John’s were honored this past weekend at a dinner sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The Knights presented the Servers with “Years of Service” awards as well as four other special awards. Franchelle Baylor received the “2008 Junior Altar Server Award” for her Leadership and Example. Matthew Feather, Kene Ezeonyebuchi, and Matthew Bauer received the “2008 John F. Upright Award” for their dedicated service to the St. John’s Altar Server Ministry. Special recognition was also given to Matthew Bauer because he has been an Altar Server for over 15 years.

All of the Servers as well as their families had a wonderful time at the dinner. Thanks to all of the members of the Knights of Columbus for such a special evening.

We will begin a new training session for Altar Servers in September 2008. All students who are in at least the 5th Grade, have received the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist, and are participating members of our parish are eligible to be Altar Servers. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Kitchin, Mrs. Kuchma, or the Religious Education Office at
301-868-3026.
